How to Download Instagram Reels
Complete guide to downloading Instagram Reels videos from public accounts.
Save your favorite Instagram Reels for offline viewing. This guide shows you how to download Reels on any device.
This guide walks through Reels, Stories (time-sensitive!), standard video posts, and Highlights β with instructions for iPhone, Android, and desktop, plus troubleshooting and legal notes.
Step-by-Step Guide
Open Instagram
Find the Reel you want to download from a public account.
Tap the three dots (...) and select 'Copy link'.
Paste in Videolyti
Go to Videolyti.com and paste the Reel URL.
Download
Click Download and save the Reel to your device.
Method 1: Using Videolyti (Online Tool)
The quickest way to grab any public Instagram content β Reels, Stories, video posts, and Highlights. No Instagram account needed, no registration.
π± On iPhone / iPad
- 1.Open the Instagram app and find the Reel or video you want to save.
- 2.For Reels: tap the Share arrow, then Copy Link. For regular video posts: tap the three-dot menu (...) β Copy Link.
- 3.For Stories: act quickly β tap the three dots while viewing the Story to get the link before 24-hour expiry.
- 4.Open Safari and go to videolyti.com.
- 5.Paste the URL and tap Download.
- 6.Save the file via the share sheet to Photos or Files.
- 7.For Highlights: tap the Highlight, then the three-dot menu for the link β Highlights don't expire.
π± On Android
- 1.Open Instagram and find the Reel or video.
- 2.Tap Share (for Reels) or the three-dot menu (for posts), then Copy Link.
- 3.Open Chrome and go to videolyti.com.
- 4.Paste the link and tap Download.
- 5.The file saves automatically to your Downloads folder.
- 6.Android tip: some phones let you share directly to Chrome β selecting Chrome from Instagram's share sheet lets you paste the URL directly into the address bar and add videolyti.com as a prefix.
- 7.For Highlights: tap the Highlight, then three dots to get the link β Highlights stay accessible indefinitely.
π» On PC / Mac
- 1.Open instagram.com in your browser.
- 2.Find the Reel or video post and copy the URL from the address bar (format: instagram.com/reel/CODE or instagram.com/p/CODE).
- 3.Open a new tab and navigate to videolyti.com.
- 4.Paste the URL and click Download.
- 5.The file saves to your browser's Downloads folder.
- 6.Note: Stories are harder to access on desktop β Instagram often shows a login wall on the web version. For Stories, use the mobile app to get the link, then download on any device.
Method 2: Browser Extensions & Apps
If you download Instagram content regularly, these alternatives can speed up the process.
Chrome & Firefox Extensions
Several browser extensions add download buttons to instagram.com pages for easier desktop access. Fair warning: Instagram's frequent interface updates can break extensions overnight. Videolyti works directly with URLs, so Instagram UI changes don't affect it.
iOS Shortcuts Workflow
On iPhone, you can create a Shortcut that grabs a URL from your clipboard and opens videolyti.com with the link pre-filled. This cuts the process to a single tap from Instagram's Share menu β no manual copy-paste needed.
Third-Party Apps for Android
Google Play has apps that connect to Instagram's sharing feature. Reliability varies β check reviews and required permissions before installing. Using videolyti.com needs no app installation and works on any device from the browser.
Method 3: Screen Recording (Last Resort)
Most useful for Instagram: Stories from private accounts you follow. You can view them in the app, but there's no public URL to grab. Screen recording is the only option in those cases.
π± iPhone
Use the built-in screen recorder from Control Center. Open the Story and start recording while viewing. Keep in mind that Stories break into 15-second segments, so longer ones produce multiple clips. Pause and restart between segments, or record the entire session as one video.
π± Android
Start the screen recorder from the quick settings panel. Open Instagram and play the Story or Reel. For private account Stories, this is the most practical save option. Be aware that some Instagram versions may alert creators to screen recordings, just as they do with screenshots.
π» PC / Mac
Windows: Win+G for Xbox Game Bar. Mac: Cmd+Shift+5 for native tools. OBS Studio lets you capture just the browser window for a cleaner result. Make sure you're logged into instagram.com to view the content you want to record.
Instagram Video Specifications
| Content Type | Specifications |
|---|---|
| Reels | MP4, up to 1080p, 9:16 vertical, max 90 seconds |
| Stories | MP4, up to 1080p, 9:16, 15 seconds per segment, disappear after 24 hours |
| Video Posts | MP4, up to 1080p, any aspect ratio (square, landscape, portrait) |
| IGTV / Long Videos | MP4, up to 1080p, max 60 minutes |
| Carousel | Each video in carousel is separate; downloads the video from the shared URL |
| Highlights | Same as Stories format but permanent β no 24hr expiry |
| Max quality | 1080p (Instagram caps all video at this level regardless of upload) |
Instagram's compression is aggressive β even 4K uploads get reduced to 1080p before they're stored. That's an Instagram limitation, not Videolyti's. You'll get the best quality Instagram actually holds on their servers.
Common Instagram Download Problems
"Content not available" error
The account is most likely private. Instagram requires a login to view content from private accounts, and Videolyti can't bypass that. Only content from publicly visible profiles can be downloaded. If the owner temporarily makes a post public, the download link will work.
Story link doesn't work or has expired
Stories disappear after 24 hours. A link copied yesterday leads to nothing today. Download important Stories as soon as you find them to preserve the content. Highlights, however, remain available indefinitely β even years later.
Downloaded video is low quality or blurry
Instagram compresses all uploaded videos heavily, limiting resolution to 1080p regardless of original quality. If the source video was already low-resolution, the download reflects that. There's no way to get higher quality than what was originally uploaded.
Carousel URL downloads wrong content
Sharing a carousel post generates a link to the entire collection, not a specific slide. Videolyti downloads the first video it finds in the carousel. Check Instagram's share options β it may provide a direct link to individual slides.
"Login required" or Instagram login wall
Instagram occasionally prompts web browsers for login credentials when visiting instagram.com. This doesn't impact Videolyti β the tool processes URLs on its servers without needing Instagram authentication. Paste the URL into videolyti.com and the download proceeds normally.
Legal Considerations
Instagram's policies technically ban automated content downloads. In practice, individual downloads for personal use fly under the radar, with enforcement focused on large-scale scraping and commercial exploitation.
Respect content creators. Instagram is a community where people invest real effort into original work. Reposting someone's content as your own or using it commercially without permission isn't acceptable. If a creator asks you to remove reposted content, comply β it's basic courtesy.
Stories vanish by design β some creators intentionally choose 24-hour visibility. If you save someone's Story, consider whether sharing it beyond your own view respects their choice. That time limit was set for a reason.
Saving a clip for offline viewing β a recipe, workout routine, or tutorial β is a common and harmless practice.
This is general guidance, not legal advice. For specific copyright questions, consult a qualified legal professional.
